Lara-Jane Stewart is a mixed media and ceramic artist, living and working on Gubbi Gubbi country, Sunshine Coast, Australia.

She is also a singer/songwriter, mother, passionate meditator and "dreamer of dreams".

Endlessly fascinated by nature, our human-ness, the Universe, consciousness, and the patterns of connection between everything, Lara-Jane's passion is exploring all of this through her artwork, songwriting and more.

I titled this one, “How Can I Keep From Singing”, which is how I feel painting and drawing flowers. I guess how I feel really painting/drawing a lot of things from the natural world 😊 but flowers are definitely a particular source of joy and endless wonder 💚💐

I have been having the absolute best time in the studio lately with a whole new series of work pouring out 💜 Multiple actually…

There’s a whole lot of blossoms going on… and birds… and butterflies!

Clearly all still very much in the botanical realms 😁🌿🌷🦋 My inspiration hasn’t shifted very far I suppose, but new expressions unfolding ✨ Here’s a little sneak preview…

I think it also has more than a little bit to do with some of my materials inspiring me too - these shimmery and deeply pigmented Ruco watercolours are very magical 🥰 Since adding a few more fun colours to my palette over the past month I’ve been “playing” more and more again - which is sooo wonderful for the spirit, but is also an important part of “working”. Artist, mum, singing/songwriting, meditation-loving, mystic forest-fairy and creativity enthusiast. Welcome to my page!

I am here to offer beauty, inspiration, and hope - not just through my artwork, but as a way of being in the world. And that’s not to gloss over the fact that life is full of challenges or pain or even despair, but actually BECAUSE of these realities. Because life can be HARD, as well as spectacular, then things like beauty, love, inspiration and hope, to me, are integral elements to cultivate within ourselves, and potentially share with the world around us if we can.

So my creative practice as an artist is an offering of my heart: an embodied expression of joy, wonder, soulful connection, and the deep, often wordless truths I carry.

Painting is one of my happiest creative places. Playing with clay and songwriting too... and many more things of course, but they are some of the big ones.

I love sharing my artistic creations with the world, and I also find immense joy in igniting the creativity of others. In reminding others, through artwork or simply by being, that there is a sacred garden of creativity within ALL of us… within YOU... that is singing YOUR name… ALWAYS.

And it is not calling you to try and express the same way as anyone else, but to bring forth simply what YOU have to bring forth, in your own ways, from your own heart 💜 Inviting you, without end, to keep on moving in the direction of that which lights you up and makes you feel more alive, more full of joy, more full of peace, of love, of inspiration and wholeness.

These lovely petite tumblers have flown the nest and are on their way to their new home 😊🙏

That’s just about all my tumblers now SOLD OUT from our pottery sale in the gallery. I have one last one left… a few more different bowls after restocking the table and still some mugs available, either as sets or individual pieces. I will try and post them all up in my stories over the coming days.

We are having a special event this Friday evening 23rd January at the gallery… we will be open extended hours, so ALL DAY from 10am to 6pm 🤗✨🎨 Making it hopefully a little more convenient for some of those who have wanted to come by and view the exhibition, but it hasn’t fit in so easily with work hours. Please feel free to pop by and say hello and enjoy a “happy hour” glass of bubbles with us or a nibble as we say a big THANK YOU everyone for all the support and appreciation of our joint exhibition “Earth Connections” at Dianne McInerney Art Gallery, Noosaville.

Two sweet sketches/paintings just for fun 😊🌿

One (the yellow ochre) I made on a play date with my fellow creative and magical friend Lisa @creativealchemi ✨ while we sat out in a tropical garden, back before Christmas. And the other (with the very subtle brown toned background), I had sketched mostly while there looking out on the topical plants and chatting together. Then added some colours to it in the studio just the other day, trying out my sample of the handmade watercolour, “orchard”, from @rucopaints 🎨 A beautiful gentle watercolour tone to play with.

And of course a bit of my Neocolor II water soluble crayons on the leaves and a touch of black Stabilo all pencil for a few tiny flashes of added definition and contrast. These two beloved mediums now a constant staple in many of my artworks, thanks to my dear friend Gillian @thecreativepilgrim - the queen of art supplies and experimentation! 🤗💜

“Remembering Wholeness”

I painted this painting, not as a picture of something so much as a kind of remembering.

The painting began in early 2025 and then rested for many moons… waiting for… something. Then in the second half of 2025, I came back to work on it after watching The Eternal Song - a powerful, poetic documentary that cracked my heart open and left me feeling even more connected to the earth… and to something deeper. Older. And… wiser… that lives within and around us.

For years I’ve had this sense that a lot of the time when I paint, it’s not just me making something. It’s more like I’m in relationship with the subject, listening, responding, receiving. Almost like the earth itself is whispering: “Here… this. Share this.”

This particular piece came through my hands and fingertips onto the canvas, as much as through my brushes, and as I painted, it felt like prayer. A transmission. Like I was offering healing to the earth, and even more so, like the earth was offering healing right back to me. A remembering of wholeness, shared in both directions.

The dragonfly feels like a carrier of that message. It’s hovering high above, as if we’re seeing the land through its eyes, in its full, wild, luminous beauty. The earth as it once was… or still is, beneath all the noise.

There are ridges and rivers, movement and breath, fine marks that remind me of sound waves or songlines. It’s a piece filled with blessing. And with longing. But mostly blessing. A remembering, and a prayer.

Said goodbye to this beauty recently as it found its new owner and forever home.

I loved the way the glazes all came up on this piece when it emerged from the kiln. An absolute delight! All the soft purples… lavender + jacaranda blues… with mint green flowing beneath and around, and milky translucent layers of white over and under creating subtle variations in tone. A total colour treat.

Always a joy too when a piece finds its person 💕🙏

Enough time to do a little sketching and a bit of watercolour… but mostly taking the chance to just sit and reflect and be for a while. Always grateful for these pockets of time.

“Earth Connections” Exhibition | 2 Dec - 30 Jan

So it’s been quite a while since I’ve shared a song on here, but today I felt moved to share via the medium of music that has always been a very big part of my life. Both writing songs myself and playing the music of others has always been for me a powerful way to both express and metabolise emotions, and often just make more sense of the world and its happenings.

Today is my birthday, and sitting here today I have had such a mixture of feelings. Feelings of deep sadness and heartache at the loss of life and terrorism that took place in Australia yesterday and ongoing conflicts still taking place around the world… mixed with immense gratitude for the experiences I was immersed in yesterday where I had the opportunity to sit and listen in community to sacred story and wisdom from an indigenous elder visiting and sharing with us from Uluṟu 💚 …all these emotions mixed together with a deep sense of privilege for my 42 years of life and all that I have received in my living. Including family, community, love, a roof over my head and places to call home, abundance of opportunities, health, wealth and social privilege, safety, freedom, joy, hope and peace. Challenges and hardships to overcome too, but far more of all the above. Or at least it seems that way to me.

I am thinking about how I have a lot to celebrate and feel happy about, and in the very same moment there is a great deal to mourn and feel sobered by. And so I got out the guitar and sang songs for a while, as I have most of my life. And I felt drawn to sing this song among others. And to share it. Just a little abridged version here in this case… For the slight balm that it may be, and perhaps little bit of inspiration. Not my inspired words or music obviously, but the late John Lennon, and with credit also I understand to Yoko Ono.

And even though I was the one singing here, it’s interesting, as I sang, I really felt like I was listening to the words being sung to me, somehow… to feel, to think about, and to just receive the blessing of.

Anyway, I hope it blesses you too in some way ❤️

The first time I heard this song I cried, it was so beautiful and resonant. It still makes me tear up oftentimes as I listen to it 🥰 It’s by local singer songwriter Ziggy Alberts, and is called “Singing For Country”. It captures so much of the depth of feeling for me of my relationship with the land I call home and with the Earth as a whole. And while I know it will evolve all my life as I keep evolving, this relationship with Earth, there is such a richness of truth expressed in the emotion of this song that speaks for me and my heart, and I’m really grateful for that.

This artwork pictured is from my current exhibition, “Earth Connections”, with Gillian Smith @thecreativepilgrim 🥰 at Dianne McInerney Art gallery. I began drawing and painting it en plein air at the Botsnic Gardens in Cooroy, Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi country here on the Sunshine Coast... Later continuing my work on it back in the studio, adding more layers of colour, texture and detail via different media, while remembering the feeling of being immersed in the landscape and held in what feels like pure unconditional love to me.

“You Took My Pain And Turned It Into Light”

This painting honours the gift of presence of this tree and others along with it… the transformative effect of simply spending time together in each other’s field of energy. My pain in this case I was carrying upon arrival to the space , at the time I began the under layers of it, was gently transformed and alchemised into peace, gratitude, love and even joy, slowly and softly, just by being there. And no doubt through the creative process itself as well, quietly drawing and painting and paying attention to the ways of the plants and the life and energy all around me, expanding awareness, and perhaps also the holding of the desire or the openness to surrender and be transformed too - all a kind of wordless prayer in a way... but the presence of this majestic tree all the while and others around me, so vast and gentle and constant… no judgement, no pressure, no coming or going… just deep peace, welcome and presence 🥰 What a gift.

One of my ceramics from the current exhibition, titled, “Singing Me Home - Dragonfly Song”. With these pots I begin by handbuilding the form using one of my favourite techniques, then painting with white and coloured slip + underglazes while the piece is still wet, before carving drawings into the surface with a needle tool. After a solid period of drying time, sometimes a couple of weeks, they are bisque fired, and after this the next layer of surface design begins with more underglazing to bring out the line work, some light, patchy layers of various glazes to tone in with the underglazes, and then finally a good coat of clear glaze all over for this piece and into the kiln again for final firing. It’s a labour of love on the one hand, and an incredible joy the other, every step of the way 💚😊🙏

Hi I’m Lara 👋😊

I thought I’d reintroduce myself in case you’re new to my page. I’m a mixed media and ceramic artist, amongst other things. I especially love working on paper with a wide range of water soluble media, but you’ll find me doing all sorts of things in my practice. I come from a background as a singer/songwriter for many years, and have often felt torn between the pull to create visually and via poetry and voice. Having children over the last 10+ years has influenced the ways in which I channel my creative energy, as it tends to do… I’ve done a lot more visual art over this time, less and less performing, and more songwriting - perhaps tending my introverted soul more through solo creative contemplation and time spent making out of the limelight somewhat. I do love coming to spend time in community spaces to make as well though, such as the @cooroybutterfactory pottery studio and most of all I love creating outdoors, directly immersed in natural spaces as much as possible. I find my inspiration in all manner of places, from philosophy, music and poetry, reflecting on the diversity of our human experiences; to scientific enquiry + explorations of the nature of the universe; to the vast, magnificent environment of our planet Earth. Born into the structures of our modern world as it is, I find myself move between a sense of separation as an individual and a sense of oneness with others and creation, like most people I suspect, in a kind of ebb and flow - sometimes absorbed by the materiality of it all and then reminded again of the immaterial aspects of existence as well… and while I have a range of spiritual practices in my life I like to engage with, I find that simply spending time immersed within the natural world around me, sketching and painting, is one of my most profound and fulfilling spiritual practices. The kind of listening these processes invite me into, the quality of observation they induce, the quieting and the breathing of it all in and remembering of oneness… is one of the things I most love to give myself to, and as such is expressed abundantly in my work.

Somewhere inside, quiet creating is happening — painting in your imagination, feeling one colour next to another, listening… tuning into the flow of what’s next. Somehow, deep consideration is happening without much effort…

And then, voilà, the next step appears… and you’re back in motion, hands moving again, carrying the idea forward into form.

Just a little peek at the larger piece I’ve been quietly working on - part of my 100 Days Project that’s been unfolding over the past few weeks, and of course just my ongoing art practice as a whole - ever-evolving and continually exploring the process of dancing with intuition in the art-making journey.

This piece is close to my heart.
It’s about the quiet magic of nature… the space between things… and the wonder of leaves on a single tree - so many, so easily overlooked, yet each one precious.
Each a small miracle - a part of the whole.
Not separate, but distinct. Like us.

The last piece I shared here was from Day 35. Since then, the project has been quietly shifting — not ending, but evolving.

I took a short trip away a couple of weeks ago, and during that time I focused solely on the breathwork and meditation aspect of the practice. When I returned home, I found myself still craving that inward rhythm — the slowness, the spaciousness, the deeper listening.

So for the past two weeks, I’ve continued the ritual — starting with meditation, then just working mostly on one large artwork that’s still in progress (for an upcoming exhibition), and occasionally on smaller experiments or journalling. I’ll be sharing a preview of that big piece with you very soon.

So while it may have looked quiet here, the work has continued — just more privately, more spaciously, more soulfully.

This project has become less about output and more about presence.

Less about sharing everything in real time, and more about staying close to what’s sacred.

This weekend marks a new chapter *visibly* in the project — as the shift I’ve been feeling internally and flowing with in the studio now begins to show up on the page.
