Lara-Jane Stewart is a mixed media and ceramic artist, living and working on Gubbi Gubbi country, Sunshine Coast, Australia.

She is also a singer/songwriter, mother, passionate meditator and "dreamer of dreams".

Endlessly fascinated by nature, our human-ness, the Universe, consciousness, and the patterns of connection between everything, Lara-Jane's passion is exploring all of this through her artwork, songwriting and more.

Check out this wacky little creation 🤩 I’ve been wanting to do this for AGES… watercolour painting on one of my ceramic pots!

This little experiment was just for fun, but I actually LOVE him 😁🫶 It looks like a cross between an avocado and a small green and gold budgie 😄 and is as heavy to hold as a small ceramic vase, BUT feels like watercolour paper to touch. What a combo! 🤭😄👌🌻 Now to experiment with sealing it. My first idea is bees wax, but I shall do some research and see first…

New works underway at Art Jam this past week and I’m loving this new colour palette unfolding. Black, greens, yellows and browns, with white. Quite unusual for me, especially working a lot with yellow. Not at all my go-to colour I’ve noticed over time, but this week apparently it is! I’m finding it an absolute delight 💛💛💛 Looking forward to seeing where the creative inspiration leads ☺️✨

One of the ceramic pieces I currently have on display as part of my Art Jam exhibit @butterfactoryartscentre 🦋 This piece was made from a slip cast of an ostrich egg, carved into, under glazed and then glazed. Part of a small series, but only this one officially on display currently, as the rest are designed to be suspended.

I formed these pieces as part of the body of work, “In My Nature”, that began last year. This work was exploring my personal responses to the natural environment; relationship to self as Nature; and my sense of the material Vs immaterial realms and bridges between them.

This piece in particular reflecting on “creation” and the mystery of gestation/formation and coming to life, as well as “transformation” and the process of changing and evolving within our lifetime, “breaking down and breaking through”… “emergence”, “re-emergence” and so on 💚

Happy new year everybody! 🤗

I haven’t posted for a month or so. It was all happening in the lead up to Christmas time and then a bit of family illness happened which meant I was throughly busy in the offline world for a while and also knocked me out of action for a week or so as well when I came down with it. But all recovered before long thankfully and have hit the ground running as we have clicked over into 2025!

I hope it’s been a great start to the year for you whatever you’re up to. I’ve still been creating despite busyness on the domestic front over the school holidays. Carving out the time wherever it can be found and particularly focusing on creating more ceramics in the home studio over the past few weeks.

This week, however, sees me getting back into some fun 2D work as well as I begin my first of five weeks set up at the @butterfactoryartscentre Cooroy in my temporary art studio space as part of Art Jam 2025 ✨

I shall share more in subsequent posts but definitely worth checking out. The gallery is open Tues-Sun and I will be there most days each week, so come one down and say hello if you’re in the area 👋😊

Have been working away on these little tiny “hope” paintings too lately. Sometimes paintings tell me entirely what they want to be and I just kind of find out as I go, and sometimes I tell them what I’d like to express or just pour my feelings out. These are a little bit of both. At the start I didn’t know more than that I wanted to paint certain colours, and as I went, I realised I was wanting to paint little landscapes of hope that I felt in my heart, and appreciation for all the many ways that rainbows arrive in life 💚

It’s been a whole lot of work and effort to get to here, but it’s been an absolute privilege at the same time.

I have been taking the chance this week to slow down, rebalance my energy and just get back to “playing” again in the studio 🎨🌼✨ Painting and drawing just for the JOY of it and following my inspiration has been a delight! Had a peaceful time yesterday finally getting some painting and drawing in at home after the past few busy weeks of finishing college, prepping for the end of year exhibition and completing & submitting all our final assignments etc. I actually handed in my very last assignment on Friday a week ago, but this past week was still full for me with various tasks on the home front and the kids, our class breakup celebration, and just gallivanting about the Coast generally across the week with various errands and appts. So yesterday was really a lovely “breathing out” time at home. Admittedly I did spend the first 3 hours of the day cleaning out and organising the studio - as you do 😂 …then found my rhythm painting and drawing and slowed right down. I gave myself permission to paint draw whatever I felt like and these little abstract landscapes are amongst the things that popped out over the next couple of hours 🥰 Such soul medicine and I’m so grateful for it.

Well what a fantastic night Friday night was. Our Diploma of Visual Arts end of year exhibition is complete. Just like that! 🤗🎨💜 Such a joy it was. Seeing everyone’s work together all at once and after the journey of this course this year, which at times has been tough and still all that poured out of everyone and into form through passion, dedication and commitment 🥰🙏 We still have a couple more weeks of assignment submissions to go before we are officially finished, but as we are about to cross that finish line I could not be prouder of everyone for each creating their awesome body of work and for putting themselves out there for the community to experience. I’m so grateful to all our families and networks of support rallying around in celebration, both locally and from afar. To my beautiful husband, our family and our extended family, I’m so thankful. To all our wonderful teachers and our amazing tutors as well this year, how very lucky we are to have had each of you. And to my teachers outside of college too, Jackie Gasson especially, I am so grateful for all you have taught me so far with ceramics and can’t wait to continue the learning journey 😊🙏

Gosh, so much more to share but I will do so across other posts. I was so busy chatting with people and enjoying the moment Friday night I didn’t end up getting all that many pictures or video, but I shall share more as I have it to hand if college puts up some footage from the show... and I will try pop up some more posts of individual pieces too that I had in the exhibition as well as some of the pieces from my body or work that didn’t go in the exhibition due to space, but I that I love and enjoyed working on ❤️😊

Was absolutely amazing the way these pieces came out from the firing, and how this one in particular was almost magically made to pair with this painting “Portal To A Dream”. Completely serendipitous ✨🤗💕

So this is the tree at the front of our property that I had mentioned in my previous post. These photos of it are at perhaps just past the halfway mark or so. It had released a lot of the bark by this point, but not all. When I first noticed it it was still quite covered, but showing lots of the deep cracks/fissures with the underlying bark just showing through, much like the glaze on my little ceramic trees that just came out of the reduction firing. The contrast is kind of reversed on this tree though with the older bark a dark colour, peeling off and revealing the lighter bark layer underneath.

Noticing this tree caused me to start paying a lot closer attention to the bark of other trees around me now as I go about my surroundings. As too has the artwork of my lovely friend from college @denibythesea_art - if you like bark or nature inspired art in general, you should check out her page and you’ll see some of her gorgeous paintings featuring different tree barks that will be on show in our upcoming Creative Showcase exhibition at @tafeqld Mooloolaba campus next Friday along with the rest of our awesome Diploma class graduates, showcasing a whole range of wonderful and diverse artwork!👌😊🎨✨🌻🌿

I thought they may turn out something along these lines, but still couldn’t really have imagined they would turn out quite as striking as this with the high contrast pattern and texture. I have to post some footage of this tree out the front of our property that has been kind of “bursting out of its bark” the past couple of weeks as it is so much like these little ceramic trees to me, in terms of the peeling bark’s texture and colour contrast. Anyway enjoy these little guys and I’ll try put a couple of still photos up a bit later too so you can look up close at the details 😍
