Lara-Jane Stewart is a mixed media and ceramic artist, living and working on Gubbi Gubbi country, Sunshine Coast, Australia.

She is also a singer/songwriter, mother, passionate meditator and "dreamer of dreams".

Endlessly fascinated by nature, our human-ness, the Universe, consciousness, and the patterns of connection between everything, Lara-Jane's passion is exploring all of this through her artwork, songwriting and more.

One of my ceramics from the current exhibition, titled, “Singing Me Home - Dragonfly Song”. With these pots I begin by handbuilding the form using one of my favourite techniques, then painting with white and coloured slip + underglazes while the piece is still wet, before carving drawings into the surface with a needle tool. After a solid period of drying time, sometimes a couple of weeks, they are bisque fired, and after this the next layer of surface design begins with more underglazing to bring out the line work, some light, patchy layers of various glazes to tone in with the underglazes, and then finally a good coat of clear glaze all over for this piece and into the kiln again for final firing. It’s a labour of love on the one hand, and an incredible joy the other, every step of the way 💚😊🙏

Hi I’m Lara 👋😊

I thought I’d reintroduce myself in case you’re new to my page. I’m a mixed media and ceramic artist, amongst other things. I especially love working on paper with a wide range of water soluble media, but you’ll find me doing all sorts of things in my practice. I come from a background as a singer/songwriter for many years, and have often felt torn between the pull to create visually and via poetry and voice. Having children over the last 10+ years has influenced the ways in which I channel my creative energy, as it tends to do… I’ve done a lot more visual art over this time, less and less performing, and more songwriting - perhaps tending my introverted soul more through solo creative contemplation and time spent making out of the limelight somewhat. I do love coming to spend time in community spaces to make as well though, such as the @cooroybutterfactory pottery studio and most of all I love creating outdoors, directly immersed in natural spaces as much as possible. I find my inspiration in all manner of places, from philosophy, music and poetry, reflecting on the diversity of our human experiences; to scientific enquiry + explorations of the nature of the universe; to the vast, magnificent environment of our planet Earth. Born into the structures of our modern world as it is, I find myself move between a sense of separation as an individual and a sense of oneness with others and creation, like most people I suspect, in a kind of ebb and flow - sometimes absorbed by the materiality of it all and then reminded again of the immaterial aspects of existence as well… and while I have a range of spiritual practices in my life I like to engage with, I find that simply spending time immersed within the natural world around me, sketching and painting, is one of my most profound and fulfilling spiritual practices. The kind of listening these processes invite me into, the quality of observation they induce, the quieting and the breathing of it all in and remembering of oneness… is one of the things I most love to give myself to, and as such is expressed abundantly in my work.

a whole world of possibilities awaits. ✨

At one point we laughed about how much a part of the process it actually is — just STARING at something for a while 😄 The painting half-painted… the pot mid-process… or even just a tree in the distance 😂

Drifting in and out of thought… floating gently between analysis and intuition… softening out of conscious decision-making and back into the felt senses.

Somewhere inside, quiet creating is happening — painting in your imagination, feeling one colour next to another, listening… tuning into the flow of what’s next. Somehow, deep consideration is happening without much effort…

And then, voilà, the next step appears… and you’re back in motion, hands moving again, carrying the idea forward into form.

It’s about the quiet magic of nature… the space between things… and the wonder of leaves on a single tree - so many, so easily overlooked, yet each one precious.
Each a small miracle - a part of the whole.
Not separate, but distinct. Like us.

If you’re new here, welcome. If you’ve been following along for a while, thank you for walking beside me through this season of creative devotion.

The last piece I shared here was from Day 35. Since then, the project has been quietly shifting — not ending, but evolving.

I took a short trip away a couple of weeks ago, and during that time I focused solely on the breathwork and meditation aspect of the practice. When I returned home, I found myself still craving that inward rhythm — the slowness, the spaciousness, the deeper listening.

So for the past two weeks, I’ve continued the ritual — starting with meditation, then just working mostly on one large artwork that’s still in progress (for an upcoming exhibition), and occasionally on smaller experiments or journalling. I’ll be sharing a preview of that big piece with you very soon.

So while it may have looked quiet here, the work has continued — just more privately, more spaciously, more soulfully.

This project has become less about output and more about presence.

Less about sharing everything in real time, and more about staying close to what’s sacred.

This weekend marks a new chapter *visibly* in the project — as the shift I’ve been feeling internally and flowing with in the studio now begins to show up on the page.

Reflecting on this practice at the 30 day mark… it is interesting to notice how much the work keeps evolving all the time, as I continue to surrender to the unknown. The “not knowing” of what I’m going to render each time. Sometimes I just begin an artwork by picking up a form I’m moved by or the colours I feel like… sometimes it’s concept, form or element I enjoyed another day and just allow myself to keep exploring further if the urge is there… Sometimes the artwork flows before the journaling and sometimes afterwards... It may relate visually in a really obvious way or it may not at all (to me anyway! 😁).

The work, as ever, really is in the practice of surrendering and the intending together in concert... The flexing and relaxing of those “interior” muscles as I move through the practice… relaxing my personal will and logical/analytical/thinking mind OR flexing it for a bit… likewise my intuition and sense of inspiration, as well as my artistic/design instincts or kind of my artistic “muscle memory” if you like.

This is how it always is really in the way I tend to create artwork in general… but doing this practice so regularly in this particular way, I can see offers me the opportunity to really hone in, pay attention and become even more familiar with the whole process that is unfolding each time. To observe and realise things like when it is harder? Easier? More or less enjoyable? More or less impactful on me? Effective (if that can even be measured - I’m not sure how much it can)… Transformative? Energising? Meaningful? And more.

I look forward to observing and realising more about the meaning-making as I go, and the shifting between the different languages of translating or reading/speaking the information of different frequencies 💫💕 or the coding/decodinging processes for us as diverse human beings.

Reflecting on this practice at the 30 day mark… it is interesting to notice how much the work keeps evolving all the time, as I continue to surrender to the unknown. The “not knowing” of what I’m going to render each time. Sometimes I just begin an artwork by picking up a form I’m moved by or the colours I feel like… sometimes it’s concept, form or element I enjoyed another day and just allow myself to keep exploring further if the urge is there… Sometimes the artwork flows before the journaling and sometimes afterwards... This piece I created during Art Jam in February. Since then I have added just a few little finishing touches and it will soon be on display as part of a group show associated with an artist’s workshop running at the @butterfactoryartscentre during April. I titled this piece, “I Remember (A Prayer With The Leaves)”.

Bringing the piece together involved really an exquisite time deep in reverie, feeling the energy of the leaves and trees, contemplating, meditating and blessing them and being blessed in return. Hence the title. I really was left feeling so much more deeply connected to the trees and plant realm from the experience.

I might perhaps share some of the words from the text part of the artwork sometime, but it’s not exactly one long piece of consecutive prose. It’s very much like a prayer from the heart that sort of shifts between words or thought form and pure feeling, and then a blend of both. It also expresses both the feeling or blessing from my heart and the feeling or blessing from the trees, kind of mixed in together. But I think it would be nice to share some of at some point 😌 Anyway, hope you enjoy 💚

✨ I wonder…… What would worthiness feel like
If it felt like something?….. ✨

Might it feel like a bud, a seed, a dew drop, a baby
glistening with new life and potential

All newness and innocence and trust and hope and safety and freedom at once

Might it feel like the peace of falling to sleep when all is well in your heart

Might it feel like a soft, warm ray of sunlight, soaking gently into your skin

Might it feel like a smile, a giggle, a peel of laughter
the feel of sharing your joy with ease

Might it feel like the grace of the breath in your lungs
helping your heart to beat

Maybe it feels like violet and pink
And indigo and clouds of gold

Billowing and swirling inside your cells
Bringing balance and vibrance untold

Maybe it feels like a song in your heart
A melody or a tone

Or just one exquisite, never-ending chord
That feels like “welcome home”

Maybe it feels like a faint, but unwavering
irrepressible knowing deep down

That there was never anything more you could do, or say, or think, or become

To be enough to be LOVED in this life

Than to just simply have BEEN at all.

Day 19/100

The artwork for day nineteen was inspired by my journal writing that talked about the experience of beauty and in particular as we may witness or perceive it expressed in nature, but of course everywhere and anywhere. The sense we have of certain colours, textures or forms being “too beautiful for words”, “heavenly” or “otherworldly”… or a sunset across the water for example so beautiful it makes us cry… as if we were touching “heaven” or it were touching us. Of course this is not limited to something visual in nature, it may be music or poetry, or someone dancing, architecture, a life being saved, suffering being eased, words of encouragement or affirmation so loving it moves a heart to tears… a warm hug that makes you feel like everything is ok… the look of true compassion in someone’s eyes… a hand on a hand, or a shoulder to let someone know they’re not alone, that kind of presence that bears the unbearable weight of grief with another and somehow makes it lighter… The kind of beauty that humbles us, that awes us, that makes us feel like LIFE is beautiful and full of meaning… maybe even in the midst of brokenness or what is seemingly lost forever… the kind of beauty that raises our frequency and brings us somehow a little more to life.

💜 I had a vision of these colours in my meditation, so I followed that in creating the artwork.

I was reflecting on this sweet little pot I created toward the end of last year, around the same time I was creating pieces for my body of work “In My Nature”.

It actually began its journey as a teapot, which you can see evidence of… it was one of the teapots I was producing in preparation for the Exit Through The Teapot exhibition this year, but while tidying up my studio late one evening when this pot was only drying still, well before it first firing, I made the fatal error of lifting it up by its handle to move it 🫣 and of course it broke off as it wasn’t yet ready to be held by the handle!!! I managed to catch it before it hit the ground, but nevertheless it was no longer destined to be a teapot.

I shelved it then for a while and later when I had the inspiration I ground and sanded it all back to its simple pot form again and began reimagining my surface design.

My inspiration was this concept of the subtle realms of nature we experience in our human consciousness, such as the fae realms for example, that we perceive either directly with our regular senses - sight, sound, touch - or with our subtler senses of intuition/psychic connection and so on, or perhaps even just in our imagination.

This piece I called “Flora’s Secret” and I loved it so much. It surprised and delighted me in how it turned out from its final firing and was one of my favourite pieces I produced during that time. I was tempted to keep it for myself 😁 but chose to donate it to the @butterfactoryartscentre fundraising raffle on during the Eclectica exhibition. I don’t know where it found its forever home in the end, but I hope it’s bringing someone somewhere some joy and perhaps a little magic too ✨☘️😊💜

My journaling for day eighteen was about the extraordinary instrument that we each are, and the music that can be played through the instrument of our being.

All kinds of music, far beyond the literal kind we think of as “song” or what we can hear as sound… the “music” of our being we can produce especially from our greatest states of love, wholeness, coherence and balance. Everything from beautiful ideas, to beautiful relationships, to beautiful constructions, systems and solutions, to beautiful words or actions of love, to beautiful feelings, prayers and energetic healing of all kinds… to of course, works of art of all kinds too…

That music of our being that is essentially moving us or others toward wholeness, higher order, syntropy… that is life-giving in nature 🎶✨💜

That saw you bravely investigate the world around you, trusting in others to keep you safe while you explored and learned.

Day 17/100

So it turned out that the artwork from day 16 had, not only a part TWO, but a part THREE as well 💛

This piece I really had zero idea in the beginning what was unfolding, but just went with it 🥰 Once I could see the two halves of the leaf together it looked like a human heart to me. And the little filaments coming off of it with gold felt like the energy of love radiating out.

I got the idea since it had two halves, what if there was something inside when you opened them up… what would that be like?

I saw this one little dried flower I had collected that reminded me of a Tahitian Tiare flower… That made me think of a part in one of my meditations from Dr Joe Dispenza - Blessing Of The Energy Centres - where he says as you’re blessing your heart centre and practising opening it up: “let your heart bloom like a flower”… so I had this feeling that maybe I could create some sort of flower artwork and that could be resting behind the two halves of the leaf-heart waiting to be discovered.

It felt like it would be beautiful surrounded by gold. That, to me, connected with the little “energy packets” of love radiating out from the heart… sort of suggesting that abundance or unlimited amount of love that resides deep within the human heart 🫀✨🥰💜💜💜

There is a piece of writing that goes with this artwork too that I will definitely aim to share in an additional post hopefully tomorrow 🙏😊

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the experience of this piece and that it maybe reminds you of how amazing and beautiful YOUR human heart is in its capacity for love ✨ Even in all it’s apparent frailty at times. No matter how much it breaks, or aches or fears or grieves or rages or feels hopeless or closed forever… our heart can always open back up, it can always be restored and love can always flow through it again, because love is generated from and living WITHIN it ❤️❤️❤️
